Overview

Water makes up 85% to 95% of a plant's body weight and is crucial for survival and growth. Here you will learn the ins and outs, dos and donts, when it comes to watering your houseplants.

Overwatered

When you overwater a plant, the extra moisture in the soil fills in air pockets, which cuts off the oxygen the roots need
to survive.

Signs

Yellowing leaves: Leaf tips will start to soften and turn yellow.
Mushy Stems: Stems will feel mushy, soft, and look transcluscent.
Pests and fungi: Overwatered soil can lead to fungus gnats and mold or mildew.

Underwatered

When your plants are underwatered, they cannot absorb the nutrients they need, causing the cellular pressure to drop and for tissue to dry out.

Signs

Crispy leaves: Edges turn brown, feel crunchy, and may curl inward.
Color changes: Leaves can fade to a dull green or brown before dropping off.
Wilting and drooping: stems and leaves lose strength and sag from the lack of water pressure.
